Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and Early Childhood through Sixth Grade (EC-6) Bilingual Generalist Certification

This 124 credit hour undergraduate degree in the Department of Educational Psychology is designed to prepare teachers (Spanish/English) to work with linguistically diverse children and their families. Undergraduate bilingual majors will develop strong knowledge and skills related to curriculum, content, and teaching/assessment methodologies that will provide challenging educational experiences for all second language learners.

Students will take 61 hours of Core Curriculum including 9 hours of Reading and 12 hours of Mathematics. The degree also requires 27 hours in area Specializations (Bilingual Education & Spanish) and 9 hours of Professional Undergirding Disciplines. Students graduating from the program will be eligible for certification (after passing all state teacher EXCET exams) in bilingual (EC-6) and generalist (EC-6).

Due to the growing Spanish speaking population in Texas, bilingual teachers are in high demand. Currently, 97% of Texas' English Language Learners are Spanish speakers. In the 2000-2001 school year over 20% of the needed bilingual positions were left vacant. Furthermore, the bilingual teaching field is expected to remain in high demand based on Texas population trends. Come join us in this exciting and rewarding teaching field!
