Masters in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Hispanic Bilingual Education

   
The 36 semester hour Masters program in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Hispanic Bilingual Education provides preparation for teaching and coordinator/director positions focusing on development, coordination and evaluation of Hispanic Bilingual, and Dual Language programs. Graduates will find immediate employment in national and international (Latin America) school settings. The M.S. or M.Ed. in Hispanic education provides a sound combination of theory, methodology, and substantive application, with some coursework flexibility within areas of program emphasis. Prescribed courses may be waived or substituted with committee approval, based on student experience and previous training, or demonstration of required skills.
 
This 36 semester hour program is designed to assist Bilingual, Dual teachers and personnel to develop effective teaching and applied research tools to increase educational opportunity and workplace access for second language students and their families. The program develops curriculum theory, instructional content, teaching methodology, accountability/evaluation strategies, and family/community partnering.
 
Competencies:
 
The degree program provides ample opportunities for field based experience. In addition to success in seminar courses, enrollees must demonstrate these skills applied to educational settings for Hispanic second language learners, including Dual Language, and Bilingual.
 
Academic and Language Learning
  • Research-supported, effective instructional techniques for high rates of student academic learning in L1 and L2 (emphasis on reading/writing skills);
  • Research-supported, effective instructional techniques for efficient second language acquisition, with continued support for first language growth and development;
  • Techniques for developing, enhancing, and evaluating curricula and lessons for Bilingual learners;
  • Classroom research techniques for evaluating and documenting student and program success; and
  • Techniques for enhancing student success on high-stakes State-wide assessments.

  • Techniques for enhancing learner self-efficacy and student general self-concept; and
  • Techniques for ensuring school-wide respect for linguistic/cultural diversity of students and their families.

    School Improvement
    Skillfully participate in school improvement efforts, including needs assessments, goal-setting, developing an action plan, evaluating improvement results. This school improvement should target academic and language learning of Bilingual students, and enhancing their status within the school community.
     
    Family & Community Partnerships
  • Techniques for developing inclusive partnerships with families;
  • Techniques for ensuring school-wide respect for linguistic/cultural diversity of students and their families; and
  • Techniques for working with the broader community and other social service agencies (interagency partnerships and collaboration).
