Bilingual Generalist Certification This 131 credit
hours, undergraduate degree in the Department of
Educational Psychology is designed to prepare
teachers (Spanish/ English) to work with
linguistically diverse children and their families.
Undergraduate bilingual majors will develop strong
knowledge and skills related to curriculum, content,
and teaching/ assessment methodologies that will
provide challenging educational experiences for all
second language learners.
Students
will take 47 hours of Core Curriculum, 24 hours of
Education, 12 hours of Reading, 9 hours of
Mathematics, 30 hours in area Specializations
(Bilingual & Spanish) and 9 hours of
miscellaneous program requirements. Students
graduating from this program will be eligible for
certification (after passing all state teacher EXCET
exams) in bilingual (EC-4) and generalist (EC-4).
Due
to the growing Spanish speaking population in Texas,
bilingual teachers are in high demand. Currently,
97% of Texas' English Language Learners are Spanish
speakers. In the 2000-2001 school year over 20% of
the needed bilingual positions were left vacant.
Furthermore, the bilingual teaching field is
expected to remain in high demand based on Texas
